Google promised all employees an additional bonus of $1,600. a reason? Pandemic and a new version of the Omicron virus.
The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted many large tech companies, including Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft, to pay additional bonuses to help employees adapt to the way they work remotely, while attracting and retaining talent in times of uncertainty.
Earlier this year, an internal survey of Google employees revealed that the general welfare of employees is deteriorating. So, CEO Sundar Pichai announced a number of additional health benefits, including a one-time company vacation in March, a $500 cash bonus and an additional “wellness” day for each time Google employees take four days off.
Reuters, citing a company spokesperson, reported that Google employees around the world will receive a bonus of 1,400 euros in December. This also includes a broader workforce of salespeople and interns. How much this one-time bonus will cost Google together is still a mystery at the moment.
This decision came shortly after Google announced that it would postpone the date for employees to return to its offices in the United States, which was originally scheduled for January 10, 2022. Google has postponed this date in other places in the world, for example in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
The tech giant will wait until next year to re-determine when sites are expected to open. The main factor, of course, is the situation at the local level.
