According to smartphones, laptops are now entering a period of narrow bezels and a high screen-to-case ratio. Huawei has been a leader in this field for several years, thanks to its FullView displays that wow users. The recently launched Matebook 14s is no exception, as it also boasts a great visual experience.
Versions of the new laptop Huawei MateBook 14s are equipped with a 2.5K touch screen and 90% screen-to-case ratio. In general, the ratio is the ratio between the total front surface area of the screen, the edges, and the usable area. Among devices with the same dimensions, devices with a higher aspect ratio provide more viewing area, which is especially true when playing video games or watching videos. In this role, the MateBook 14s presents a really impressive picture.
Camera design thanks to narrow bezels
Manufacturers have relatively few solutions available to increase the screen-to-case ratio. Following the example of smartphones, one of these cameras is located under the screen or in the notch of the screen, but such an approach affects the screen resolution and limits the capabilities of the camera. How did Huawei manage to achieve such a high aspect ratio while keeping the camera in the most convenient place in the edge just above the screen? Thanks to an extremely small unit, just 2.25mm wide, it is held in place with the help of laser welding technology. Both helped anchor the Punch cam to the slim top bezel and achieve an extremely high screen-to-body ratio of 90%.
The introduction of laser welding in the production of notebook computers
This technology is so precise that it was developed for the production of smart watches and other small devices. At the same time, it is very demanding. The components are small, so the probability of errors and therefore ejection in production is relatively high. In an effort to get around the limitations, Huawei engineers have developed a fully automated laser welding process.
To be successful, the technique requires precise alignment of the element with the location on the circle. Therefore, Huawei robotic technology uses a design that ensures the strength and reliability of the welding. It is credited with using one of the industry’s most accurate CCD sensors and algorithms to reduce aberrations. A highly advanced pressure sensor has been used to ensure a tight fit of the welded seams. This detects even small changes and thus reduces smoke formation during welding. The final step towards achieving the required accuracy is the use of high-frequency laser scanning, which affects the strength and durability of the product.
The result is a new camera for the Huawei MateBook 14s laptop, in the manufacture of which they used all possible technologies and knowledge to ensure reliability and high-quality performance.
Experience using the FullView screen
Thanks to the combination of a small module and laser welding technology, the Huawei MateBook 14s laptop has a camera on the top edge without being wider. However, it offers a resolution of 720p and, through its infrared (IR) sensor, also securely and quickly unlocks the computer based on reliable facial recognition.
