Huawei P50 Pro: a great phone with a versatile camera!

Huawei has made us accustomed to making significant improvements in imaging capabilities with every new smartphone, as well as improvements in bare-bones power. Despite the problems the company has faced in recent years, the P50 Pro has not failed.

The ban on the use of US technologies had consequences on several levels and encouraged Huawei to become an increasingly powerful third vehicle with the hardware ecosystem for anyone who does not like Google or Apple. Namely, they were able to offer many good alternatives to Google services and applications, which convinced most of the global and local developers to adapt the application to the AppGallery, while most of those who still need a Google base work in a virtual GSpace environment. Things are not going well for them in the field of semiconductors. As if global scarcity wasn’t a big enough problem in and of itself, the US blockade hit them and limited production of the Kirin 9000 processors that the first P50 Pro phones were equipped with. That’s why we have a version with last year’s most powerful Qualcomm SnapDragon 888 processor, but without the interface for 5G mobile networks. A limitation also imposed on Huawei.

The lack of connectivity, Huawei makes up for in other areas, the aesthetics of the device, charging speeds and versatile mobile photography. The aluminum and glass body follows the design motif that has been a fixture of Huawei phones for the past few years. The lightweight, slim and detailed body features two large circles on the back of the device, which conceal imaging components and are reminiscent of the legendary look of dual-lens reflex cameras. The rounded edges of the large screen and continued curvature of the back combined with the under-display optical fingerprint sensor and the device’s thinness make for high comfort for one-handed use. The cleanliness of the design does not bother at all, on the contrary, it nicely has side buttons, a line of holes at the bottom and top, which hide solid stereo speakers, a slot with a mole drawer and a USB-C port. In all respects, the P50 Pro is a premium smartphone made of high-quality and expensive materials, which attracts attention and easily competes with its competitors.

When the processor is fully loaded, this is unlikely in normal use, as it heats up significantly, so Huawei has been able to dissipate heat throughout the case rather than heating up the slick. The phone runs at full loads for a long time before the system slows down the processor cores to prevent overheating. The P50 Pro is also equipped with 8 GB of RAM, while the storage is at least 128 GB. This is enough, since there is a slot for a memory card. The battery capacity (4360 mAh) is not entirely large, but it will be enough for at least a full day of moderately demanding use. Since we recently adopted the principle of short-term charging and keeping the battery charged between 40 and 80 percent, which is best suited to its health, the 66W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging. The 16.8 cm (6.6 inch) OLED screen is also excellent, capable of displaying 1 billion colors and at 120 Hz refresh, which will be especially appreciated by fans of demanding mobile games. In addition, the screen is bright enough for outdoor use in almost any situation.

A special feature of the phone is the imaging part, which particularly emphasizes the improved quality of the images with 10x hybrid zoom and re-introduction of monochrome this time 40 million sensors for beautiful black and white. It has a main camera of 50 million, a wide-angle camera of 13 million, a camera with a periscope lens and a 3.5x optical zoom with a sensor of 64 million. The advancement of mobile photography is the least visible in wide-view images, but this time it is adapted not with hardware components, but with software and algorithms that reduce data loss during image processing. The result is richer detail, crisp images, and natural colours. They are meant to be exactly as the eyes see them. Progress is also noticeable in the night mode, where Huawei phones have been shining for a long time.

The Huawei P50 Pro is one of their great devices, made with better quality, if not the best photographic capabilities. Just because of Google’s absence, it doesn’t make sense to immediately discard every idea about it. Of course, it does not suit you if you are completely dependent on the services of an American technology company, but if you are one of those who use a limited set of applications and these applications are also available in the AppGallery, then it certainly belongs in the shortlist of high-performance smartphones.
