Prestigious Football Ballon d’Or winners will receive NFTs

The organizers of the Ballon d’Or, the most prestigious individual award for professional soccer players, have announced for the first time that winners will receive Non-Foldable Tokens (NFTs) with the trophy.

The prize, presented by France-based Equipe Media Group, will reveal for the first time the NFTs of the winners during the 66th ceremony while the public will have the opportunity to purchase other prize-related kits, Agence France-Presse. Le Figaro reported on September 8.

In addition to awarding the NFT award to the best male and female soccer players, the collectibles will also be available alongside the Copa Cup (best jersey), the Machine Cup (best goalkeeper) and the Muller Cup (best striker).

NFT . Long Term Strategy

According to the media group, the integration of NFT into the Ballon d’Or is part of a long-term strategy.

“This first group will be followed by other groups such as Ballon d’Or, and more generally the Equipe and Amaury groups, that want to project themselves sustainably in the world of Web3, the new age of the decentralized internet,” said Equipe.

The project is a partnership with blockchain platform Tezos, Door-Sport, a creative agency interested in sports, and Web3.

According to Emily Montaigne, Head of Strategy, this is the time to get into the NFTs, noting that most prices have stabilized.

“It was a speculative phenomenon. Now the market is stabilizing: there are the same number of buyers, but the prices aren’t crazy anymore… They will own the NFT and can do whatever they want with it. It’s an important part of communication,” Montagne says.

The award joins other adventurous sports-related organizations in the metaverse and NFTs, which Montagne said they noticed the sector long before deciding on an entry strategy.

NFT Golden Ball Auction

Equipe has also indicated that it will auction three NFTs that will give holders VIP access to the awards ceremony scheduled for October 17, while another hundred have been put up for sale after the event.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale will be challenged to support philanthropic work at Fondaction l’Équipe, which supports projects related to sports.

Some of the football entities venturing into the NFT include the English Premier League which has applied for several brands. Such projects are seen as an opportunity to connect with fans and raise funds.

The Ballon d’Or winner appeared after earning his NFT debut on Coinphony.
